If David Reinbacher was selected 5th overall in the 2023 draft, it is because the Canadian’s managers saw great potential in him.
On the other hand, the more things go, the more we hear that the CH made a mistake by choosing him so early.
It’s defensible in a sense, because the Canadian’s hope had a fairly difficult 23-24 season in Kloten.
That said, a year and a few months removed from Reinbacher’s selection, Corey Pronman (The Athletic) decided to revisit the 2023 draft to see who was misplaced.
Here is what especially attracts attention: among the top-7, it is Reinbacher who has fallen the most in Pronman’s ranking.
The prospects expert placed Reinbacher at 15th on his list, which equates to a drop of 10 positions when looking at the original draft:

- Leo Carlsson
- Adam Fantilli
- Will Smith
- David Reinbacher
- Dmitry Simashev
- Matvei Michkov
Among these players, only Simashev fell out of Scott Wheeler’s top-6 and it is Nate Danielson who “replaces” him in 6th place.
Simashev, in Wheeler’s ranking, is placed in 7th position.
All this to say that David Reinbacher fell drastically in Scott Wheeler’s “re-draft” and that is normal in a sense.
I say that this is normal because we must not forget one thing in all this: Reinbacher was not in a favorable position during the last season for people to speak well of him and now we are expected to miss almost the entire season with a significant left knee injury.
You have to give the runner a chance, after all. And for the moment, the defender hasn’t had that chance yet.
