National Team – Pape Thiaw at press conference: “I am a soldier from Senegal and I have been entrusted with a mission which is to qualify this team”

On the eve of the return match against Malawi, the interim coach of Senegal faced the press. Opportunity for him to reiterate the group’s ambition which is to qualify for the CAN from this Tuesday but also his future at the head of this team.

“The state of mind is good and we must congratulate the players for that because it is extraordinary. And let’s hope that we continue to surf this because it is very important to approach this type of match” declared Pape Thiaw on FSF TV this Monday morning in Lilongwe, on the eve of the Malawi vs Senegal match (1 p.m. GMT).

Winner in the first leg (4-0), the technician however expects a difficult match for the return leg but firmly believes he will qualify for CAN 2025 tomorrow. “We know we will have a very difficult match. We will face a very upbeat Malawi team who also want to have their chances and who are not yet eliminated but who have their backs against the wall. We want to qualify from tomorrow, we have put all the ingredients in place to obtain our qualification from tomorrow on our side. Now on good foundations, with things that we will put in place and hope that it will work.”

Appointed interim coach to lead the national team during these qualifications which will end next November, Pape Bouna Thiaw, who is cited among the candidates to succeed Aliou Cissé, prefers to concentrate on his mission. “We follow all the networks but I put myself a little aside. Right now, I know it’s talking a lot but I’m here to do my job. I am an interim coach, I must qualify this magnificent group who have been working for a long time. We have to finish the work and let the future do things… I am here, I am a soldier from Senegal and I was entrusted with a mission which is to qualify the national team. We are on the right track. Hopefully it will be done tomorrow. We will always be there for Senegal” he said.
