The Polish Iga Swiatek, who withdrew from Wuhan, retained her place as world No. 1 in the WTA rankings published on Monday, but sees the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka rushing towards her, who is only 69 points behind.
Titled Sunday at the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan for the third time in her career, Sabalenka returns to contact with Swiatek, while the American Coco Gauff, beaten in the semi-final in Wuhan by Sabalenka, nevertheless benefited from the elimination of her compatriot Jessica Pegula from the eighth to pass the latter in the rankings.
Also out in the eighth, the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia however gained two places to take 10th place and thus regain the best ranking of her career.
