The “comet of the century” was clearly visible in the Gironde sky, this Sunday, October 13, 2024, shortly after 8 p.m. Many amateur photographers have immortalized the scene.
This is the case of Timothée Gimenez, passionate about photography, who had already captured the Northern Lights from South Gironde on the night of Thursday to Friday. This time, he positioned himself near Langon and his images are magnificent.
Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, also called C/2023 A3, was perfectly visible to the naked eye. Even from the Bordeaux metropolitan area where light pollution is high.
“It was a first for the children”
” It was a beautiful emotion for the whole familythe children discovered a comet for the first time,” says Elodie Cazaux, who lives in Pessac.
“I kept a memory moved by the comet that passed in 1997 when I was a teenagercontinues the mother. I am happy to have been able to enjoy such a spectacle again. Normally we have to see her for another week provided the sky is clear. »
The comet is visible until the end of the month
Indeed, the “comet of the century” should still be visible in the Gironde sky over the coming days. This is especially true this week because as the days go by, its passage will be further and further from the Earth’s surface and will therefore be less and less perceptible to the naked eye by the end of the month.
“I would have liked to go see her by the sea but I couldn’t,” reacts Mathilde Tosch, who lives in Bordeaux-Caudéran. She watched for his passage from the window of her home, in the axis of the setting sun.
And bingo, a little before 8:30 p.m., she was visible! I’m quite fascinated by what’s happening above our heads, so that does something to me.
By the ocean or on the Arcachon basin, as light pollution is less, the comet was even more perceptible as we can see in the photos below of Manon Lascubé or Marlène Nicolas.
In this article, the national editorial staff ofactu.fr explains how to avoid missing the “comet of the century” these coming evenings. “As it has just gone around the Sun, we will have to look towards our star when the day sets – more precisely, to the west, a little to the left. »
On the other hand, be careful, it will be less and less visible over the next 15 days since it gradually moves away from the Earth and will therefore be less bright and smaller. On the other hand, its train will lengthen and become more imposing.
