Frenchman breaks ‘death dive’ world record with 44m high jump

There’s a world of difference between not being afraid of heights and… this. This Monday, diver Côme Girardot broke the world record for the biggest “death dive”. The Frenchman actually jumped into a reservoir from a cliff located 44 m high, reports The Dispatch.

The incredible dive, organized at the Cimbarrilla waterfall in Andalusia (Spain), was obviously filmed by several cameras. The videos, published by Côme Girardot on his Instagram account, garnered millions of views in just a few days. A longer video will be posted on his YouTube channel soon.

“I had planned the jump, my movements, everything”

During this jump, the young Frenchman, only 22 years old, reached a maximum speed of 106 km/h before entering the water. With this exceptional dive, he won the world record, previously held by Lucien Charlon, a Franco-Swiss who had recently jumped from a height of 41.7 m.

“Joining the ’40 club’ has been my goal since my last world record of 36 m. After planning this for eight months, with ups and downs, it’s finally here! », indicated Côme Girardot on Instagram. “I had planned the jump, my movements, everything. But when I was almost done with all these movements, I was still 25 m from the water. »

The death dive, or “dods”, is a practice from Norway which quickly conquered the whole world and in particular thrill-seekers. It consists of diving into the water while curling up on yourself at the last minute, which allows you to limit the effects of the shock but also to imitate a dish.
