The Toronto Maple Leafs and John Tavares have reportedly started discussions regarding a contract extension.

This was indicated by TSN hockey expert Pierre LeBrun on Tuesday.

It appears there is mutual interest in continuing the association between the player and the Queen City organization.

Tavares could become an unrestricted free agent next summer. In 2024-2025, he concludes a seven-year agreement with an annual value of $11 million. The center player signed this pact in July 2018, after choosing to leave the New York Islanders.

The 34-year-old Ontario native was named captain of the Maple Leafs before the start of the 2019-20 season. However, this title was taken away from him last summer and given to Auston Matthews.

Last year, Tavares hit the target 29 times and provided 36 assists for 65 points in 80 games. The first player selected in the 2009 draft has collected 1,040 points in 1,109 career games in the National League.

Tavares and the Leafs will begin their 2024-2025 campaign on Wednesday evening, as part of a visit to Montreal to face the Canadiens.
