FC Saint-Gall – Servette FC: on their momentum, the Garnet must win

As part of the 9th day of the Super League, Servette FC will travel, without Gaël Ondoua still suspended, to Kybunpark this Sunday, October 6 (4:30 p.m.) to face FC Saint-Gall. With one point behind FC Lucerne, FC Zurich and FC Lugano, a victory is imperative to avoid falling in the standings.

The performance of the last match

In front of 12,000 spectators, the Grenat won their first Lake derby of the season. A meeting in which the Servettians were able to dominate their opponent, without putting on a great match, against the Lausanne residents who saw Jérémy Frick be decisive at the right time. On a corner kicked by Julian Von Moos and deflected by Alexis Antunes, Dereck Kutesa scored the only goal of the match in the 32nd minute. A victory and three important points after a draw against Grasshopper the previous weekend (2-2).

The form of the opponent

Currently 5th in the league with 13 points and 3 points behind the Genevans, the Brodeurs remain in a surprising defeat against Yverdon-Sport (1-0) at the Municipal Stadium. Opposed to a Paul Bernardoni concentrated in his goals, the Saint-Gallois did not manage to come back after Hugo Kamano’s opening score in the 72nd minute.

A defeat all the more surprising, because they remained on a convincing victory against FC Zurich (4-1). But this sums up the start of the season for FC Saint-Gall rather well because, apart from in the Swiss Cup against modest teams, the club’s results in the league are up and down with 4 victories, 1 draw and 3 defeats. However, we must not forget that the Brodeurs also play in the Conference League, which may explain these results.

Engaged in this competition, this Thursday, October 3 against Cercle Bruges (6-2 defeat), they could leave some energy on the field and face Thomas Haeberli’s troop a little blunted next Sunday.

The player to be wary of

Willem Geubbels is one of those players that some have, perhaps, too quickly described as a “future gem”. Trained at Olympique Lyonnais, he was sold in June 2018 to AS Monaco for 20 million euros, then only 16 years old. Playing little, he will be loaned to FC during the 2021-2022 season and will sign freely for FC Saint-Gall in January 2023.

It is since his arrival in the Swiss championship that this 23-year-old striker has really started to stand out. With FC Saint-Gall, he took part in 66 matches, scoring 16 goals and 7 assists. This season, he is currently the club’s top scorer with 3 goals and 2 assists.

Entered in the 66th minute against Yverdon-Sport, in anticipation of the match against Bruges, Willem Geubbels has become an important and decisive player for the St. Gallen club.

The Servettian to follow

Like his start to the 2023-2024 season, Derek Kutesa has put together a series of convincing performances. Current top scorer in the Super League with 5 goals in 8 games, he offered the Lake derby to the club and the supporters, he scored the equalizer against GC and, even if it seems far away today, he scored the only goal Servetti against Sporting Club de Braga (1-2) during the return match at the Stade de Genève in the Europa League on August 15.

With Kutesa in good form, Servette FC has an offensive element capable of taking any defense from behind with his formidable acceleration and his sense of goal. All he needs is his first assist in the league.

So it will be interesting to watch the match in the match between Dereck Kutesa and Willem Geubbles.

To stay in the fight for the top of the table, the Servettians therefore have only one objective: victory. The Grenat have no other choice, they only have the championship left to aim for a new European qualification. However, in the event of a setback, the Saint-Gallois would return to equal points (16) but with a better goal difference! Whether at Kybunpark or elsewhere, let’s all support Servette FC this Sunday for a meeting that promises to be thrilling! Also worth noting is the probable appearance or tenure of Julian Von Moos, former player of the St. Gallen club, who arrived free at Servette FC last July at the end of his contract.
