NHL: Travis Green would become head coach of the Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators have reportedly found their new trusted man behind the bench. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Travis Green will become the team’s head coach.

Several details would still need to be resolved before the official announcement of an agreement.

Green has served as interim head coach of the New Jersey Devils since the firing of Lindy Ruff on March 4. He also served as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks from 2017 to 2022.

As an NHL head coach Green, 53, is 133-147-34 in the regular season. He made the playoffs on just one occasion, leading the Canucks to the 2020 Western Conference Final.

The Senators finished the last season under the orders of Jacques Martin who occupied the interim after the dismissal of DJ Smith on December 18.

Last year, Ottawa went 37-41-4 en route to 26th place in the overall NHL standings. The team from the national capital was excluded from the playoffs for a seventh consecutive season.

As a player, Green appeared in 970 NHL games over 14 seasons with the Islanders, Ducks, Coyotes, Maple Leafs and Bruins from 1992 to 2007.
