Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, 34, signed up this Wednesday, as planned, with FC Barcelona until the end of the season to compensate for the absence of the German Marc-André ter Stegen, seriously injured in a knee, announced the Catalan club.
The former Juventus goalkeeper, who retired this summer after seven seasons in Turin, signed until June 2025 with Barça, who were looking for an experienced free goalkeeper to replace the young Inaki Pena.
“Although the new goalkeeper arrives in a very particular situation, it is undeniable that his CV offers all possible guarantees,” welcomes the Blaugrana club, referring to his rich career.
Passed by Arsenal, AS Roma and Juve, the Polish international (84 caps) should quickly become a starter in the Barcelona goals in the absence of captain Marc-André ter Stegen, unavailable several months after his rupture of the patellar tendon of the right knee.
At Mundo Deportivo, the Polish goalkeeper wanted to spare a thought for his German counterpart, who underwent surgery this Monday. “I just hope Marc recovers soon, he’s a good friend and a great goalkeeper and I wish him the best. This is the only thing I can comment on,” he assured. His last match dates back to the group stage of Euro 2024, last June, with his national team.
