NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins show associate coach Todd Reirden the door

The Pittsburgh Penguins fired associate coach Todd Reirden on Friday.

The move comes as the Penguins failed to qualify for the playoffs for a second straight season, finishing the campaign with a 38-32-12 record.

Reirden, 59, was in his second stint on the Penguins coaching staff, having served as an assistant coach from 2010 to 2014 under head coach Dan Bylsma.

During his second tenure, Reirden helped the Penguins to two playoff appearances, but they failed to advance past the first round.

“We are grateful to Todd for his dedication and commitment to the Penguins during two distinct periods with the organization,” Penguuins President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas said in a statement.

“Mike Sullivan and I have spent time over the past two weeks evaluating the coaching staff and, while these decisions are never easy to make, we agree that this change was in the right direction. best interest of the team for the future. »
