The sequel to one of Netflix’s most popular films in recent years is finally released on the streaming platform, and it has every chance of being a hit as well.
It is often difficult to estimate in advance which Netflix program will be a success or not. But one of the highlights of the week on the streaming platform will undoubtedly be the arrival of this new film, following a big success of 2020 in France. This Spanish thriller remains to this day the fifth most viewed non-English film on the streaming platform, with 82 million views recorded. The second episode comes out in a few days, and has every chance of also being a hit.
In 2020, The platform had created a surprise on Netflix. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, this Spanish thriller which flirts with horror and science fiction plunges subscribers into a vertical prison, the pit, where prisoners are divided each month in twos on hundreds of levels.
Every day, succulent dishes are placed on a platform that descends to each level, the last having only leftovers with as little food as possible. Only those at the top can survive, while the lower levels are condemned to starve, devour each other or kill each other in despair.
Very conceptual, The platform had aroused the curiosity of subscribers, many saying they did not fully understand the scenario and especially its rather enigmatic ending, which had forced Netflix to publish a video explaining the different interpretations that could be made of this thriller, the film being notably a metaphor of different social classes.
This first episode of The platform had won several awards, including the audience award in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival in 2019, or the 2020 Goya for best special effects. Logically, and given the success of the film on the streaming platform, Netflix ordered a second film. The plot is still very enigmatic, since it follows a new resident who fights against the cruel feeding system set up in the prison. Platform 2 is released on October 4, 2024 on Netflix.
