Decision on change to F1 points scale postponed

Meeting this Thursday, the F1 Commission did not rule on the proposed change to the points scale, which we unveiled last weekend on the sidelines of the Chinese Grand Prix. The subject was indeed one of those discussed around the table, but the choice not to rush anything prevailed.

According to information from Motorsport.com, any decision on the issue is postponed until the next meeting of the commission, where the ten teams as well as the FIA ​​and Formula 1 sit, with the aim of carrying out more careful analysis work on the implications by then. of such a revision. This deadline is made possible by the fact that the deadline to definitively establish the texts of the 2025 Sporting Regulations for the discipline still remains far enough away to allow in-depth reflection.

The idea which is gaining ground today is to widen the points zone by no longer rewarding the first 10 drivers to finish but the first 12, to respond to the problem of the smallest teams facing places monopolized by the top teams on a regular basis.

The modification under study would not imply a fundamental change for the first seven places at the finish of a Grand Prix, with a more than limited impact on the fight at the front compared to what we currently experiencing. After five Grands Prix contested in 2024, three teams have still not opened their account: Williams, Alpine and Stake F1.

In addition to that of the lowest ranked or least resourced teams, the proposal received public support from Christian Horner (Red Bull) and Frédéric Vasseur (Ferrari) when they were questioned in the Shanghai paddock last Sunday. If a consensus seems quite likely in the event of a desire to introduce this system, the non-decision at the end of the F1 Commission meeting therefore resembles for the moment a clear desire to allow enough time before change anything, and not a blocking of all or part of the actors.
