What if DAZN sought to review its copy? If the LFP is confident and thinks that this is a posture, it is however preparing for everything.
After six months of broadcasting Ligue 1, DAZN has a disappointing record. The platform, which has acquired eight of the nine weekly matches of the championship, is struggling to achieve its objectives. Despite promotions and a price reduction, it only had around 400,000 subscribers last November, a figure well below expectations. Faced with this situation, the management of DAZN expressed its dissatisfaction with the Professional Football League (LFP) and attempted to improve its editorial offering with initiatives such as the magazine Le Mag Live and the multiplex MultiZone. However, piracy remains a major problem, slowing the growth of the number of paying subscribers.
According to sources close to DAZN, 90% of the subscriber potential has already been exploited, making the objective of 1.5 million subscribers necessary to guarantee the viability of the current contract of 400 million euros annually unlikely. This situation compromises the return on investment, pushing DAZN to consider a renegotiation of its financial commitments with the LFP, or to activate an exit clause planned for December 2025. For their part, the LFP and BeIN Sports, also concerned by this potential renegotiation , are closely monitoring developments in the matter.
-In this uncertain context, the LFP could revive the idea of creating its own platform to broadcast Ligue 1, an option ruled out during discussions last July, but still considered as a long-term alternative. However, this possibility raises the crucial question of economic viability, while the finances of French clubs remain fragile, with nearly 200 million revenue lost per year attributed to piracy. A new strategy would therefore be essential to guarantee a stable future for French professional football.
