Arriving from Rennes during the summer transfer window, Jeanuël Belocian will not play again this season with Bayer Leverkusen. The German club announced on Monday the knee injury of the French Espoirs international who will miss several months of competition.
Frenchman Jeanuël Belocian, international Espoirs (5 caps), suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be unavailable until the end of the season, his club, Bayer Leverkusen, announced on Monday. European champion in 2022 with the under-17s, the young defender, who will turn 20 in February, will not be present for the Under-21 Euro (June 11-28) in Slovakia.
“The defender tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Sunday's friendly match against Rot-Weiss Oberhausen,” Bayer Leverkusen announced in a press release published on Monday.
A complicated start to the season for Belocian
Trained in Rennes, Jeanuël Belocian was transferred to Bayer last summer until 2029 for a sum estimated at 15 million euros. But the promising defender's start to the season was disrupted by physical problems. After starting on the bench, Xabi Alonso's protégé has only had one start in the Bundesliga since signing for Leverkusen.
Already absent for more than a month following an ankle injury sustained at the end of October, the former Rennes prospect has played little this season with the reigning German champion, playing nine matches in all competitions.
The German club adds that Belocian, whose knee condition deteriorated overnight from Sunday to Monday, will not play again this season.
