An 18-time ephemeral Olympian during the second half of the 2015-2016 season, what happened to Scottish striker Steven Fletcher?
Loaned by Sunderland during the second half of the 2015-2016 season, the 1m85 Scottish striker arrived at Olympique de Marseille at the age of 28 in order to bring experience to the Marseille attack in a complicated season. Despite a promising start, marked by a goal in the Coupe de France against Trélissac and several starts, the Scottish center forward will not make any more of an impression on the Canebière. He will end his time at Marseille with 18 appearances in all competitions for 3 goals and 3 assists. At the end of his loan, he will return to the north of England to the Academy of Light in Sunderland.
Rebound in England
After his Marseille adventure, Steven Fletcher is not retained by the Black Cats and will join Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship (English D2). He quickly established himself there, becoming one of the team's executives and an indisputable starter. He stayed there for four seasons, for a total of 38 goals in 134 appearances.
In 2020, the Scottish international will join another Championship club, Stoke City, with whom he will score 12 goals in two seasons. He will then return to the country by heading to Dundee United in 2022. Club with which he will find the net 10 times. In 2023, at the age of 36, he joined the ambitious project of Hollywood actor Ryan Reinolds at the Wrexham club in Wales, where he still plays today. In two seasons, the former Marseille player played no less than 50 matches for 10 goals, thus actively participating in the rise of the Welsh club from League Two (English D4) to League One (D3) last season.
