A week after Cyclone Chido passed through Mayotte, France observed national mourning this Monday in tribute to the victims.
From Mamoudzou to the courtyard of the Elysée, like almost everywhere in France, a minute of silence was observed in the country in tribute to the 35 victims of Cyclone Chido which devastated the island of Mayotte on December 14.
A minute of silence which had “the meaning of a communion in mourning, it has the meaning of solidarity for those who are in the ordeal”, commented François Bayrou from Matignon, while expressing his “solidarity for those who are in the ordeal. For the Prime Minister, it was important “that the Mahorais feel surrounded by an entire country”.
“In the hearts of all French people”
In the main courtyard of the Elysée, President Emmanuel Macron observed a minute of silence alongside Prime Minister Brigitte Macron, at 11 a.m. (Paris time). On X, he assured that “the Mahorais are in the hearts of all French people. The victims in our memories. The Nation in mourning”.
The Head of State called on the entire country, from French people in France to those overseas, to participate in this day of national mourning in tribute to the victims of the passage of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte, this Monday, December 23.
