The Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, legendary lair of the Saint-Étienne Greens, was forced to close its doors for five days following a large gas leak occurred near the enclosure. This unexpected situation disrupted the schedule of the Saint-Etienne team and led to the cancellation of several events planned at the Chaudron.
An accidental leak with major consequences
It all started with the accidental breakthrough of a gas pipe during survey work near the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium. The methane fumes proved too great, forcing the evacuation of the Musée des Verts and the ticket office, as well as the closure of the Étivallière Sports Park where the women's team plays. A prefectural decree was issued to order the complete closure of the Chaudron premises as a security measure.
A disrupted sports and events calendar
Two major events were canceled: the evening celebrating the two years of the Brasserie du Chaudron, as well as the opening of an exhibition paying tribute to the late photographer Philippe Masseguin.
A return to normal for the next deadlines
Fortunately, after five days of closure, the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium was able to reopen its doors this Monday morning. He will thus be able to host the reception of Marseille in Ligue 1 this Sunday evening, before meeting them a few days later in the Coupe de France. A decisive double confrontation for the Greens, who will end the year 2024 in their legendary Cauldron despite this unexpected setback.
