As in basketball, coaches could have the right to a “challenge” by requesting verification of the VAR on the actions of their choice in football.

The information was released by the iconic Pierluigi Colina, head of the FIFA referees committee: VAR could experience a huge revolution in the coming months. And for good reason, FIFA wishes to develop the Football Video Support system, an alternative to video assistance for refereeing as we currently know it. The idea is to offer, as in certain sports such as basketball, one or more “challenges” to coaches so that certain decisions are verified at the request of the coaches. This system was already approved by the IFAB last March and was tested this year for the Women's Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups.

A VAR version of basketball in football is being studied

“The experiences during these two competitions will be analyzed carefully but so far we have not noticed anything unexpected. However, it is essential to understand that FVS is not VAR” said former Italian referee Pierluigi Colina. A full report will now be drawn up by the referees committee and sent to the FIFA Board, which will then decide whether the experiment will be extended to other competitions. The news risks in any case causing a reaction and on the side of the coaches, there is no doubt that we would rather be in favor of the idea of benefiting from one or two “jokers” to verify the actions of their choice during a match in within a certain limit of course.
