'I was told I might no longer be able to play competitively', Danso reflects on his aborted move to Roma

His aborted transfer to AS Roma strongly affected Kevin Danso. Two months later, the Lensois central defender returns to this painful event, he who is now better and who has resumed competition since October 19.

A recovery after seven missed matches, two consecutive starts… Kevin Danso can now talk about his painful episode in August. While the Austrian international defender went to Italy to sign with AS Roma at the very end of the summer transfer window, during his medical examination, a heart examination detected a heart problem, which canceled his transfer.

Two months later, the unfortunate event is digested, but not forgotten. “It hurt me. Going to Rome, not signing there,” says the Lensois in the columns of The Teamwho now prefers to put things into perspective: “I always say that I am not unhappy. I have my family here, a good club.”

“I became mentally stronger”

This aborted transfer to Roma did not remain without consequences. The former Düsseldorf player assured the French daily “that he did not undergo an operation, but only a test.” But to make sure everything would go well, Danso toured Europe. “I went to Switzerland, to England, to see specialists for heart problems. But I first went to to undergo other tests. There, they told me it was not good. I had to stop competing,” he explains to L’Équipe. The Lensois could nevertheless continue to train, but several times he had to “leave the session to go to London, do tests and come back.”

If he took the necessary time before resuming (October 19 in Saint-Étienne, 2-0 victory), after missing five Ligue 1 matches and the play-off against Panathinaikos, Kevin Danso used this episode to “become mentally stronger”. “Two months ago I was told that I might not be able to play competitively anymore. It wasn't true. But I heard it. Fortunately, I was very supported by the club, the environment. A real family. When I come to train, I have never been sad, but happy to find my partners”, he concludes in his interview with the newspaper L'Équipe.

This Saturday, the central defender could make a third consecutive start, against Saint-Germain (5 p.m.).
