Reinforced security for the Classic: PSG supporters deprived of travel to Marseille
On Sunday October 27, 2024, theMarseille Olympic and the Paris Saint-Germain will meet for a new chapter in their legendary rivalry during the Classic at the Stade Vélodrome. However, this meeting will take place in a particular context: Parisian supporters will be absent from the stands, prohibited from traveling by a government decision.
A historic rivalry marked by animosity
For decades, the Classic OM-PSG is much more than just a football match. This confrontation between the two most popular and successful clubs in France is accompanied by an intense rivalry, both sporting and cultural. Each meeting between these two teams triggers passions, not only on the field, but also in the stands and in the streets of the respective cities.
This historic animosity between Marseille and Paris supporters, often punctuated by violent incidents, led the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, to take a drastic decision for the match on October 27. According to a recently published decree, any individual claiming to be a supporter of Paris Saint-Germain will be prohibited from traveling to Marseille on the day of the match, whether for an individual or collective trip.
A decision motivated by risks of clashes
The Ministry of the Interior justifies this ban with a “ real and serious risk of clashes » between the two camps of supporters. This is not the first time such action has been taken for this high-risk poster. The history of confrontations between OM and PSG is punctuated by episodes of violence, whether before, during or after the matches, in and around the stadiums.
This precaution takes place in a particular context. Indeed, a large part of the police forces, mobilized tirelessly during the period of Olympic Games of Paris 2024, have been placed on rest for this period, thus reducing the resources available to ensure optimal security during this match in Marseille. As a result, it appeared more prudent for the authorities to limit the risks by prohibiting the presence of Parisian supporters.
