PSG: Safonov fired by Russia, the controversy grows

Arriving at PSG last summer, Matvey Safonov made little noise in the capital. While he should have gone to the Russian selection during this international break, it ultimately did not happen.

Matvey Safonov has been moving in the shadows since his arrival at PSG. The Russian had time to express his potential during three meetings in September. He will need much more to be a real option and become number 1 in the capital instead of Gianluigi Donnarumma. Moreover, his recent arrival in remains a mystery for many PSG fans and observers. Still, Safonov remains an international goalkeeper and Russia is counting on him. The goalkeeper was pre-summoned with his selection for the October break but ultimately, the 25-year-old player will stay with the Ile-de- group. A decision that the Russian selection justified…

Safonov, a major problem for Russia?

Indeed, the Russian team undoubtedly did not want to take any risks with Safonov, who risked not being able to leave the country because of his recent conviction for failure to pay alimony to his former partner. Moreover, it was his lawyers who advised him to stay in Paris during the October truce. In any case, officially, Russia’s goalkeeper coach, Vitaly Kafanov, indicated in recent hours to the local press, via Sport-Express : “It’s not clear if there will be matches or not. There are no confirmed matches yet, that’s why we haven’t called them.” While Russia wanted to play Pakistan in a friendly on October 11, this meeting should ultimately not take place due to legal problems. In the end, Sbornaïa could challenge a Russian club to try to stay on pace. Everyone will therefore have their opinion on the decision to do without Safonov… PSG will nevertheless be able to say thank you to the events.
