England and Greece players are wearing black armbands in Nations League clash at Wembley

England and Greece players will both wear black armbands during their Nations League clash on Thursday evening.

The match will take place at Wembley, with England looking to make it three wins out of three in their Nations League group.

Lee Carsley’s side defeated Republic of Ireland and Finland last month, and are behind Greece on goal difference after they beat the same opposition by a total five-goal margin.

Both sides will wear black armbands tonight following the death of former Sheffield United defender George Baldock.

After the Greek FA submitted a request to UEFA to wear black armbands, the FA have confirmed that there will also be a period of silence before the game gets underway.

There are also plans for Wembley to acknowledge and celebrate the life of Kick It Out founder Lord Herman Ouseley, who died at the age of 79 last week.

Baldock, who was 31, was found dead in his swimming pool at his home in Athens on Wednesday. He was playing for Greek giants Panathinaikos.

The right-back was of Greek descent through his grandmother, and collected 14 caps for the senior national team.

Prior to his summer move to Panathinaikos, Baldock had spent his entire career in English football, barring a short loan spell at Icelandic club IBV in 2012.

He came through the MK Dons youth academy and made over 100 appearances before joining Sheffield United – where he would go on to play in the Premier League – in 2017.

England paid tribute to Baldock after news of his death was announced last night, writing on social media: “We’re extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock.

“George was close to many of our players, and represented Greece – our opponents on Thursday night.

“We’re thinking of George’s family, friends and team-mates at club and country at this difficult time.”

Sheffield United and MK Dons also paid tribute to their former player, while former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire – who came through the Blades’ youth system – posted a message to Instagram.

A number of his former team-mates have also responded, including Oli McBurnie and Gustavo Hamer, as well as his former Blades manager Paul Heckingbottom.
