Faced with soaring prices, Moroccans are opting for self-construction

The surge in real estate prices in Morocco is pushing many Moroccans to build their own homes. According to the magazine Finances News Hebdonearly 48% of Moroccans choose this option. In rural areas, more than 90% opt for this method of ownership.

“The interest in self-construction can be explained by different reasons. First of all, for cultural reasons, many Moroccans prefer economic type houses, that is to say R+1, R+2, R+3 built on plots of 60 to 120 m², because they are perfect for large and/or mixed families,” explains the magazine.

The other advantage of this option is the construction in stages, depending on the financial means of the owner and his tastes. However, this option presents “several limitations, such as long delays in obtaining authorizations or carrying out work, compliance with Moroccan standards in terms of safety and quality, or even the choice of construction materials”.

“It was essential to simplify procedures and activate technical assistance for the benefit of interested people,” admits the Moroccan government. A reform of Law 90/12 relating to town planning should allow the applicability of these measures.
