Breast cancer: more than half of women in France know little about risk factors, according to a study

With 61,000 cases in 2023, and 12,600 deaths, breast cancer is still the most common cancer in women. The number of cases has increased in recent years, but knowledge about the risk factors has only continued to decline. According to a survey for the League Against Cancer that Inter revealed this Friday in preview, still one in two women say they do not know much about breast cancer.

In this survey, 53% of the women questioned admitted their lack of knowledge about breast cancer. And inevitably, many of them are unaware of what can cause the disease. For example, two out of three women do not know that alcohol is a major risk factor for breast cancer. And 49% of women still do not identify tobacco as an aggravating factor in this disease.

Less than one in two women have a mammogram every two years

The League Against Cancer is concerned about these poor figures… which add to the weakness of the latest screening campaigns. Less than one in two women aged 50 to 74 have their check-up mammogram every two years. And the trend has been downward over the last 10 years.

Faced with this alarming lack of knowledge, the League Against Cancer will launch a new prevention campaign starting next week, to mark the start of Pink October, breast cancer awareness month. Better knowledge of the risk factors for the disease encourages more women to be screened. And there, the figures are relentless: when detected in time, 9 out of 10 breast cancers are cured.
