GROENLO – Enthusiasts have been looking forward to it for months; the ninth edition of the Battle of Grolle is just around the corner. On October 25, 26 and 27, Grolle will again be dominated by the Battle. The municipality of Oost Gelre reports that the permit has been granted.

By Kyra Broshuis

During the event, parts of the historic battle from 1627 are re-enacted on the battlefield, just outside the fortress. This is a risk event (C event) and therefore the permit application has been submitted to the mayor for decision-making. The municipality has also been asked to take traffic measures for the event. The Battle of Grolle Foundation has applied for an event permit to organize the Battle of Grolle in the center of Groenlo. The streets of Groenlo are returned to the atmosphere of 1627. There are encampments where the reenactors stay and spend the night. In the evenings there is a torchlight procession. Between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors are expected on Friday and Saturday, and even 20,000 on Sunday. The number of participants in the event is 1,500. A so-called table top meeting is being organized under the leadership of the VNOG (Safety Region North and East Gelderland). This discusses foreseeable and unforeseeable risks that this event entails. This allows preventive and repressive measures to be taken.

Closure of the center
The Battle of Grolle Foundation has drawn up a mobility plan on the basis of which the traffic measures to be taken are proposed. The GOV is informed by the organization about the closure of the center to car and bicycle traffic. The organization has held discussions with entrepreneurs and shopkeepers in the center. This has led to an agreement between the organization and the board of the GOV (Groenlo’s Entrepreneurs Association) for closing the center (the area within the canal) to car and bicycle traffic. The closure is in effect on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center is closed longer on Friday and Saturday due to the torchlight procession. The Molenberg is kept outside the fence and remains accessible to visitors and residents. The weekly market will be canceled during the event. In consultation with the market master, no alternative location for the weekly market has been found. In addition, entrance fees must be paid before Friday to enter the center of Groenlo. This also keeps customers away from the weekly market. The market master has decided in consultation with the market vendors that there will be no weekly market in Groenlo on Friday, October 25.

The costs for the event permit are borne by the Slag om Grolle Foundation. Based on the fees regulation, fees must be paid this year as it is a C event. The costs for this are €5,000 (€0.25 x 20,000 visitors).
