“I think the ceasefire can pave the way for lasting peace”cautiously estimated the American Secretary of State, Blinken, visiting on January 8, regarding the agreement concluded on November 26 by Hezbollah and Israel. Skepticism, fueled by actions and declarations, remains, however, as the date approaches when the militiamen of the Shiite movement and the forces of the Jewish state must have left southern Lebanon.

The agreement, which entered into force the day after its signing, leaves sixty days for the two parties to give way to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) supported by the blue helmets of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Their withdrawal should therefore be effective on January 26, but the almost daily violations of the truce, reported on both sides, and the distrust displayed by the Israeli authorities as well as by the Shiite militia, whose military infrastructure in the region must, moreover, being dismantled within the same time frame fuels doubts as to whether this deadline will be met.
