How many tourists took advantage of the Brittany and its riches between the months ofApril and September 2024? Beginning December 2024 the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies has taken stock of the summer tourist season.
A decreasing number of nights
“Between April and September 2024 in Brittany, attendance at tourist accommodation decreased by 6% compared to the 2023 summer season to stand at 21.2 million nights», Indicates INSEE in its report. “This decline follows two record seasons. In the region, tourist attendance during the year 2024 remains higher than levels before the health crisis,” it is specified.
In 2023, 22.5 million nights had been recorded during this same period. Although a drop in the number of nights should be noted, this remains “at a relatively high level”, underlines the Institute.
Fewer French residents in Brittany this summer
If “tourists from abroad return as numerous as in 2023”, according to the report communicated by INSEE. Customers from other countries represent 4.3 million overnight stays in the region.
In Breton campsites and hotels, 96% of attendance from non-resident customers is made up of nights from European customers.
German tourists (1.1 million overnight stays in 2024, i.e. +1.6% compared to the previous season), British (904,000, i.e. -2.4%) and Dutch (703,000, i.e. +1.1 %) maintain the podium for non-residents and represent 68% of foreign customers.
“Those residing in France were less present in the region, particularly in July. » Resident customers represent 8 out of 10 nights.
The gloomy weather in 2024 has most likely contributed to the drop in the number of nights in Breton campsites, hotels and other collective tourist accommodation.
Brittany is not the only region to have experienced a drop in attendance. The Ile de France and Centre-Val de Loire also experienced a drop in tourist numbers.
A decreasing number of nights in Morbihan
According to INSEE, Morbihan is the department which experienced the most significant drop with 772,000 fewer nights a drop of 10.4%. Despite this drop, 6.6 million overnight stays were recorded in Morbihan accommodation.

After a record year 2023, the 619 campsitesBretons have returned to the 2022 attendance level with 13.6 million overnight stays.“Of the four Breton departments, Morbihan is the one where the drop in attendance in outdoor hotels is the sharpest (-517,000 overnight stays), particularly in April (-33.5%),” indicates INSEE .
