The Rugby Club Toulonnais is about to say goodbye to one of its key elements: Leicester Fainga'anuku. The New Zealand center will leave the club at the end of the season to return to his native land and try to regain his place among the All Blacks. A loss which could well leave quite a void in the Var squad.
A choice dictated by international and family obligations
At the end of the season, Fainga'anuku will return to New Zealand to meet the All Blacks' selection requirements, which require players to play on New Zealand soil. This return is also motivated by personal reasons, as the player explained.
“Family is important, especially with the birth of my son. It was a good time to return” (RCT Blog).
The powerful three-quarter had nevertheless found his balance in Toulon, but the challenge of rejoining the All Blacks and playing again in his country won out.
A valuable contribution to the RCT
Arriving with international star status, Fainga'anuku quickly found his place in the Toulon squad. Repositioned in the center by Pierre Mignoni, he demonstrated all his versatility and his impact on the game.
His performances have often turned matches around, both through his physique and his tactical sense.
“He’s incredible in matches. He is a player who transcends himself on the pitch, a true leader in key moments” (Rugbyrama).
His offensive qualities and his presence in the locker room will certainly be missed by the group next season.
A departure tinged with regret
Leicester Fainga'anuku did not hide his attachment at the RCT and the Top 14, even going so far as to express a potential desire to return.
“I will miss Toulon. I loved playing here, and the Top 14 is a unique championship. If the opportunity arises, I would like to come back” (Rugbyrama).
This declaration of love for the club and his teammates reflects the importance this experience had in his career.
An end to the season to make history
Before his departure, Fainga'anuku remains determined to leave a lasting mark. Its objective is clear: bring back a trophy at the club. The fight for the Brennus Shield and the Champions Cup is therefore a top priority for the player and the team.
“I want this season to be remembered and end in style with a title” (Rugbyrama).
As the RCT prepares for this transition, expectations remain high to replace a player of this stature.
I grew up in a family where rugby was at all times. I was at the edge of the pitch when Castres beat Pau and joined the elite, I was in the Stade Pierre Antoine facing Gary Whetton when he did his Haka to celebrate the 1993 Brennus and I was always rocked legends of this sport. Now, it is with XV Ovalie that I intend to extend the adventure. #TeamCO
