Entering a town takes care of itself. And Toulon does not want to be an exception to the rule. The municipality has therefore decided to give a facelift to the Porte des Oliviers, on the east side.
The last major work dates back to 2015. “We were faced with an aging of the planted species which, in addition, suffered from drought”explains Martine Bérard, the green spaces assistant.
The plant highlighted
First element: “All healthy olive trees will be preserved.” After cleaning up the dead plants, others will be planted. “These will be Mediterranean species which resist well in our territories”comments the elected official. Markets are underway. If a few cypresses had to be removed, the municipality assures us that they will be replaced.
On the ground, we will find sedum grass. It is a succession of succulent plants “which bring both green and color.”
The basin put back into service
Another novelty, the pool which borders the median will be put back into operation. “There will be around ten water jets. Everything works in a closed circuit. And we will also take care of its lighting.”
To make the installation more efficient, it was decided to modernize the entire watering system. “It will now be ultra-efficient drip by drip”, assures Martine Bérard. The objective: to adapt to the drought which impacts the region every summer.
Work schedule
Construction has started “gently” in the month of May. Interrupted during the summer, it restarted at full speed in September.
In addition to the developments already mentioned, it is also planned to redo the flower beds and redesign a pedestrian path. A dry stone wall will also be erected to hide the technical room of the tunnel present on site.
The City expects work to be completed by early 2025.
