Twenty-four people have died in the explosion of a tanker truck that crashed in southwest Haiti. There are also about forty injured, some of them seriously burned and who will have to be treated by the Ministry of Public Health and Doctors Without Borders.

The explosion occurred, according to witnesses, as the victims were trying to collect fuel leaking from the crashed tanker truck in the Miragoâne district in the southwest of the country.

Acting Prime Minister Garry Conille has called an emergency meeting following the tragedy, he told AFP.AFP Emmanuel Pierre, national head of Civil Protection. According to this Haitian official, other charred bodies were discovered in the evening near the site of the explosion, raising the death toll from 16 to 24.
