What to watch this weekend: “Zorro” (Paramount +)

(By Christophe Carrière) Let’s not beat around the bush: “Zorro” with Jean Dujardin is a success! He takes over so the thin moustache of Guy Williams (title role of the “horseman who emerges out of the night”) and gets back on Tornado’s steed, Grégory Gadebois has the plumpness and good nature of Sergeant Garcia, André Dussollier naturally adopts the father figure of Don Alejandro de la Vega (the hero’s dad), an unknown (and nevertheless excellent actor: Salvatore Ficarra) puts himself in the shoes of the faithful and deaf-mute Bernardo, Éric Elmosnino makes himself a real deceitful face and, last but not least, Audrey Dana becomes Gabriella de la Vega, wife of Don Diego Dujardin. Except that she does not exist in the initial series where Don Diego remained an incorrigible bachelor. Which brings us to the strong point of this new version.

The action takes place twenty years after the masked vigilante’s exploits. The latter, now in his fifties, has put away his costume and whip and leads a quiet life with his wife. The couple has no children and is not about to have any, given their sex life, the encephalogram of which is extremely flat. This detail, seemingly anecdotal in a story whose backbone is supposed to be the fight against injustice, quickly becomes the crux of the war waged by Don Diego de la Vega since his wife becomes Zorro’s mistress – who keeps his mask on.
