There was a time, not so long ago, when it was strange when Switzerland did not place a single representative in the second week of a Grand Slam tournament. Those days are well and truly over, and it would already be good news if there was one in the second round of the US Open, which began Monday in New York.
The responsibility lies with veteran Stan Wawrinka, 39, who will face Mattia Bellucci (23) for the very first time in his career this Tuesday at around 11pm (Swiss time). The ATP ranking speaks in favour of the Italian, 101st player in the world against the number 176, but the experience of the Vaudois, winner at Flushing Meadows in 2016, could make the difference.
