This is a first for the 38-year-old from Thurgau and a great honour for him, who will enter the competition this Friday at the Stade de France with the 5,000m wheelchair qualifying. “It’s very important for me to be able to attend the opening ceremony,” said the six-time gold medallist (12 medals in total) who is taking part in his third Olympic Games after Rio and Tokyo. In Paris, this huge champion will take part in three track races as well as the marathon.

During this opening ceremony, which will take the athletes from the Champs-Elysées to the Concorde, Marcel Hug will lead the delegation of 27 athletes in the company of Elena Kratter. Three years ago in Japan, the 28-year-old from Schwyz won bronze in the long jump. At the Stade de France, this athlete, who had her right leg amputated since birth, will also line up in the 100 meters.
