‘My heart is broken’: Mariah Carey loses her mother and sister on the same day

American singer Mariah Carey announced on Monday the deaths of her mother and sister, which occurred “tragically” on the same day last weekend.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother last weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the singer of the song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” lamented in a statement on Monday, according to the BBC.

The multiple Grammy winner went on to say that she felt “blessed” to have been able to spend the last week with her mother, Patricia, who was 87 before her death, she continued, according to Sky News.

Except that on the same day, her sister Alison, 63, also died. The cause of death of the two women has not been specified.

The 55-year-old singer had a complex relationship with both women, which she described in her 2020 memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”

Because according to her, a certain competition had developed between her and her mother, a former opera singer of Irish-American origin, due to professional jealousy because of her success.

“When the person is your mother and the jealousy comes out at such a young age, it’s particularly painful,” she said, according to the BBC.

She had also recounted her troubled relationship with her brother Morgan and her sister Alison, claiming that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to have no contact,” the British media continued.

Following the publication of the memoir, Alison reportedly filed a $1.2 million lawsuit against her sister, who she accused of causing her “immense emotional distress” for “vindictive” purposes, according to the BBC.

Despite this, the grieving singer thanked the public for their support in the last days.

“I appreciate everyone’s love, support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she added in writing, according to Sky News.
