Massachusetts on alert after deadly mosquito-borne virus emerges

Man’s worst enemy strikes again… The mosquito is wreaking havoc on an entire region of the United States. In Massachusetts, the city of Plymouth has decided to take drastic measures against the spread of a mosquito carrying the Eastern equine encephalitis virus, a potentially fatal disease, as reported by BFM TV.

Following a case detected on August 16, the city has decided to close all public parks and fields from evening to morning since Friday. All activities planned in these places have also been canceled. The city of Oxford has, for its part, banned all outdoor activities after 6 p.m. These are the times when these mosquitoes are most present.

First case recorded since 2020

“10 locations have been classified as high or critical risk for Eastern equine encephalitis virus,” the Massachusetts Department of Health said in a statement. “Aerial and truck spraying” is planned.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus, also known as triple E, is a potentially fatal disease. Symptoms range from headaches to fever, vomiting and seizures. Authorities estimate that about 30 percent of infected individuals die, while many others suffer neurological damage.

In 2020, the last epidemic to date, the virus caused seven deaths for 17 recorded cases.
