They were getting a driving licence for a bribe in Zurich

Three employees of the Zurich motor vehicle department in Bassersdorf who allowed themselves to be corrupted will soon be tried. The three men are a traffic expert who administered driving tests and two employees who organized the appointments. They acted skillfully: since the allocation of candidates was random, the expert was able to count on his two accomplices to provide him with students who were willing to pay. He contacted candidates who had already failed the first time, assuring them that the second time would be the right one… for a sum of money.

A total of 77 student drivers obtained their driving licences between November 2019 and November 2021. On average, they spent 500 francs for the document certifying their success. The candidates were mostly from immigrant backgrounds. The trio shared a loot of around 35,000 francs. According to the “NZZ”, twelve students have already been sentenced to suspended fines for corruption. The three collaborators appeared before the Bülach district court on Tuesday in an abbreviated procedure. This means that the three Swiss have confessed to their wrongdoing and accepted the prosecutor’s proposed sentence.

The latter requested a suspended prison sentence of 2 years for the traffic expert, as well as a fine of 500 francs. For his two accomplices, the prosecutor requested a suspended prison sentence of 12 months and a fine of 500 francs. In addition, the three defendants will have to pay debts of between 3,000 and 4,000 francs and cover the costs of the investigation.
