The Pittsburgh Penguins lost the services of forward Evgeni Malkin during Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken.
The forward left the game in the first period and the organization confirmed he was suffering from a lower body injury.
While trying to take the puck away from Chandler Stephenson, Malkin’s left knee took the impact.
In 46 games this season, Malkin has nine goals and 34 points under his belt.
Earlier in the day, the Penguins recalled Quebec forward Bokondji Imama from their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm club in the American Hockey League.
To make room for him in the lineup, the Penguins traded defenseman Owen Pickering to the AHL.
Imama has yet to play a game in the National League this season, but has 15 career games with the Arizona Coyotes and Ottawa Senators.
The robust forward from Montreal has scored 3 goals, collected 2 assists and received 47 penalty minutes in 24 games so far since the start of the campaign.
Pickering returns to the NHL, after scoring 1 goal and obtaining 2 assists in 25 games with the Penguins. The team’s 1st pick in 2022 also had 1 goal in 12 NHL games earlier this season, his first in the professional ranks.
Dewar’s name on injured list
The Toronto Maple Leafs placed forward Connor Dewar on the injured list and recalled forward Nikita Grebenkin from their AHL farm club.
The decision is retroactive to January 20. Dewar has 3 assists in 29 games since the start of the campaign, his 2nd with the Maple Leafs.
-Grebenkin has not collected a point in 7 games with the Maple Leafs this season. However, he has 8 goals and as many assists in 29 games in the AHL.
A minor trade between the Lightning and the Rangers
The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired the services of forward Ryder Korczak from the New York Rangers in exchange for those of forward Lucas Edmonds. Both players are in their 3rd season in the American League, having been drafted in 2021 and 2022.
Korczak has scored 3 goals and 8 assists in 35 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack since the start of the season, while Edmonds has scored 1 goal and collected 4 assists in 26 games with the Syracuse Crunch.
Edmonds had 34 goals and 79 assists in 68 in his first and only OHL campaign in 2021-22, but he has not yet been able to translate that production to the professional ranks.
Soon reinforcements in Ottawa
Center Josh Norris and defenseman Travis Hamonic both participated in the Ottawa Senators’ morning skate Saturday morning, but both wore “no-contact” jerseys.
Blanked in their last two games, the Sens wouldn’t say no to a little reinforcement, they who are at the heart of the fight for a place in the playoffs.
Hamonic hasn’t played since Jan. 3, when Norris was removed from Tuesday’s game against the New York Rangers as a preventative measure after a fall. His chin had hit the ice rink violently.
Also absent during the last game against the Bruins on Thursday, defenseman Jake Sanderson was back in training at his regular position, to the left of his partner Artem Zub. Sanderson and Hamonic should be in uniform Saturday against the Leafs.
In front of the net, Anton Forsberg will defend the colors of the Sens, even if Linus Ullmark was also in training. The team, however, confirmed that the Swede was not ready to return this weekend.
