Morocco and Mauritania signed a memorandum of understanding this Thursday for the electrical interconnection between the two countries, report Moroccan official media.

Moroccan television SNRT News, indicated on its website that the signing took place between Leïla Benali, Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition, and her Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Ould Khaled, during the latter’s visit to the Kingdom, which began Thursday , without indication of its duration.

Benali affirmed that “the connection project constitutes a strategic step of capital importance, which will contribute to strengthening the energy security of the two countries, promoting regional integration and being part of the ambitious vision of creating an energy network common regional.”

She added that “this interconnection will improve electricity supply in a competitive manner, strengthen the stability of the networks and achieve energy integration promoting the development of the two countries.

It also represents an opportunity to develop regional energy infrastructure, making it a pillar for deepening African economic integration.”

She stressed that “the partnership between the two countries contributes to strengthening the exchange of experiences and skills in the fields of energy, natural gas and electricity.”

The MoU aims to develop cooperation in the electricity and renewable energy sectors between the two nations.

Mauritania, ranked among the countries with the highest electricity tariffs in the region, is striving to reduce its costs by importing energy, in particular by securing part of its electricity needs through interconnection with Morocco.

It is expected that Mauritania will benefit from Morocco’s experience in electricity production, especially since the latter ensures coverage of its territory with electricity and is committed to producing 52% of its electricity needs at from renewable energies by 2030.
