The US Senate voted Monday evening to confirm Marco Rubio as secretary of state.

The son of Cuban immigrants and a prominent figure in the Republican Party, Marco Rubio, 53, is known for his strong positions on foreign policy and national security. Since his election as a senator from Florida in 2011, he has risen through the ranks to become one of the heavyweights in American politics. As vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Rubio has established himself as an influential voice in international relations. His confirmation as Secretary of State strengthens his stature as a diplomatic strategist.

Marco Rubio has stood out in recent years for his virulent criticism of Algeria. In 2022, he called for sanctions against this country because of its close relations with Russia, in particular its massive supply of Russian arms. In a letter to then-Secretary of State Blinken, Rubio expressed his “deep concerns” about a $7 billion defense contract between Algiers and Moscow.

According to Rubio, these transactions were in violation of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which requires the United States to sanction entities dealing with Russian defense or intelligence sectors.
