The former vice-president, who replaced President John Magufuli, who died suddenly in March 2021, had shown signs of openness when he came to power, in particular authorizing the publication of media banned by his authoritarian predecessor.

But the opposition has accused him in recent months of returning to the practices of Mr. Magufuli (arrests, kidnappings, etc.)

The CCM held an extraordinary general meeting on Saturday and Sunday to elect the party vice-president and receive the manifesto implementation report for the last four years.

The members eventually demanded and received the endorsement of Ms Hassan and Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi as candidates for re-election in next October’s poll.

The secretary general of the CCM Emmanuel Nchimbi was named Ms. Hassan’s running mate.

“We have no alternative candidates for 2025,” we could read on signs.

“We have accomplished a lot over the past four years and I promise to do more in the next term,” the president said.

“I urge everyone to maintain our unity as the elections approach,” she added during her closing speech.

Last week, the leader of the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT Wazalendo) party, Dorothy Semu, announced her intention to challenge Ms Hassan in October.

The main opposition Chadema party has not yet started this selection process, but is expected to elect a new president on Tuesday.

The party, however, warned at the end of 2024 of its intention to “block” the 2025 elections if significant reforms to the electoral system were not implemented by then. A long-standing request, constantly ignored by the ruling party.

This announcement came after the results of the local elections of November 27, manipulated according to Chadema, which showed a tidal wave of the CCM.
