Formula 1 | Alonso: I always had to make do with less than the others

Fernando Alonso said ending up with equipment ” lower “ has been “the story of his life”.

The statement comes after the two-time world champion admitted he is likely to retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2026 season if Aston Martin does not give good signals of competitiveness with the new regulations.

The 2025 season will mark the 20th anniversary of Alonso's first title with Renault, a third world title having eluded the Spaniard for two decades. He also remains winless since his penultimate season with Ferrari in 2013.

“When I was a child I only had a modest kart. In Asturias it rains a lot and when it rained all the kids put on rain tires and I raced with slick tires because we didn't have money to buy rain tires.”

“And it still continues today.”

“Here we have all the resources for rain tires, but we don't have the wings that Ferrari has, or the floors that McLaren has, or anything like that.”

“That’s kind of the story of my life, running with slightly inferior weapons to everyone else and adapting to what I could.”

Even today, Alonso claims to have “still as thirsty for success”with a goal of at least returning to the victory that he hopes to achieve with Aston Martin and Adrian Newey.

“Even after twenty years without a title, if I'm karting and I look at the times table and I'm second, a tenth or half a tenth behind first, I have the same inner rage, the same frustration, the same anger and I might not even have dinner that evening.”

“In I'm not in that same state because everything depends a lot more on the machine you have. But I'm still just as hungry for success.”
