ECOWAS condemns “heinous” attacks in northern Benin

(Agence Ecofin) – This announcement comes after the terrorist attack which caused the death of 28 soldiers on Wednesday January 8, 2025 in Benin.

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned, in a press release published on X, on Sunday January 12, the terrorist attacks of Wednesday January 8 in northern Benin. She condemns “ unequivocally the heinous attacks perpetrated by unidentified armed men in the Trible point area ».

The institution reiterated its commitment ” farm “ aimed at eradicating terrorism in West Africa, through the implementation of a strategy to combat terrorism in all its forms, while calling on Member States to strengthen their collaboration on the exchange of information and border protection. ECOWAS also reiterated its commitment to member states in their efforts to ensure the security of citizens and the community.

Terrorist attacks in Benin could impact certain economic sectors such as tourism, affect cross-border trade, deter investment and increase security costs for the government. For 2025, the defense budget recorded an increase of 18.76%, reaching approximately 118.13 billion FCFA ($183.5 million) compared to approximately 99.72 billion FCFA for 2024.

Remember that several countries in the West African sub-region are experiencing a situation of insecurity and violence due to terrorist attacks, notably Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and Nigeria. According to ECOWAS, the border area between Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger recorded 1,814 incidents of terrorist attacks causing 4,593 deaths in the first half of 2023.
