JI wouldn’t say like Bruno Retailleau, because I think we should judge people for what they do and not for what they are”, Darmanin said. He then clarified his thoughts on immigration: “When I passed the immigration law, I said we had to be mean to the bad and nice to the good..”
The Minister of Justice also spoke of the duality of immigration: “Immigration is neither bad luck nor good luck. When it is reasonable and we can integrate them, it can be an opportunity for France.”
Regarding Franco-Algerian relations, Darmanin reacted to recent tensions, exacerbated by hostile comments from Algerian influencers in France. He proposed reviewing an agreement dating from 2013 which exempts holders of diplomatic or service passports between the two countries from short-stay visas.
The minister wants “touching Algerians who have an intention of humiliation” towards France. “This 2013 facility must be removed. Algeria must respect France, France must respect Algeria”, he further declared.
