The Quebecer, full of confidence, defeated the German Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round 6-3, 6-0, 4-6 and 6-1, after two hours and 24 minutes.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked 29e seeded in the tournament, scored 19 aces during the duel, compared to 15 for Struff. He committed three double faults, compared to four for his rival.
He also won 80% of the points on his first serve, compared to 52% for his opponent.
Auger-Aliassime and Struff, a 34-year-old veteran, had split their first four career clashes.
“FAA” thus maintained its perfect record in 2025. It recorded four victories – in addition to benefiting from a withdrawal – at the Adelaide tournament, which it won last weekend. It was his sixth career ATP Tour title.
In the second round in Melbourne, Auger-Aliassime will cross swords with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard qualified for the second round when his opponent, Chinese Juncheng Shang, was forced to retire in the second round.
Montrealer Gabriel Diallo will begin his journey in the main singles draw on Monday evening, against Italian Luca Nardi. For his part, Ontarian Denis Shapovalov will have a meeting in the middle of the night with Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
In the women’s category, British Columbian Rebecca Marino will face Briton Katie Boulter in the first round. As for Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez, she will play her first round match in women’s doubles with her Ukrainian teammate Nadiia Kichenok.
