Cases of foot-and-mouth disease in water buffalo have been detected near Berlin, the first reports of the disease in Germany since 1988, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Friday.

The focus of the disease is located in the Brandenburg region, neighboring Berlin, said a ministry spokesperson. According to regional authorities, three water buffaloes are affected.

The animal viral disease affects cattle, pigs, goats and sheep in particular, but is generally non-fatal.
