A winter storm is currently hitting the United States, where light snowfall was recorded in New York on Monday January 6. Just enough to cover the streets and alleys of Central Park with a delicate white film, giving the Big Apple a magical feel. A situation which unfortunately was not as idyllic everywhere, as recalled by CBS News, which reported five deaths across the country.
The polar vortex left many roads unsafe, forced school closures, and caused power outages and flight cancellations in Kansas, western Nebraska, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois and Missouri, where snow records were recorded (35 cm in Kansas City on Sunday).

Two pedestrians died in Missouri, struck by motorists who lost control on icy roads. Two others were killed on Sunday after being thrown from their car, which slid down an embankment. And one person died Saturday when the trailer attached to their truck “began to swerve due to icy conditions.”

Forecasters are warning of a risk of “extreme fires” today and the next (Wednesday January 8), caused by a “deadly and destructive wind storm”.
