The American IT giant Microsoft has just announced its intention to invest $80 billion over one year to build data centers necessary for the deployment of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models and applications.
“More than half of this total investment will be in the United States. This reflects our commitment to this country and our confidence in the American economy,” said the group’s president, Brad Smith, in a blog post published Friday.
Data centers house the computer servers that form the backbone of the cloud, and therefore mobile applications, online services, and all the new generative AI models and tools like ChatGPT.
Furthermore, Smith encouraged the future American administration to invest massively in research related to new technology. “The United States cannot afford to slow down the private sector with heavy regulations,” he assures.
The group based in Redmond in Washington State (northwest) generated more than $72 billion in net profit in its last fiscal year, ending at the end of June 2024, mainly thanks to its cloud business.
