Cyclone Chido wreaked havoc on the French island of Mayotte, particularly among the many shanty towns which logically could not resist the force of the winds. And if the Prime Minister, François Bayrou, insisted that these makeshift towns should not be rebuilt, in fact, the inhabitants are already hard at work, for lack of anything better.
If Mayotte stands out in Europe for the size and number of its slums, there are many others elsewhere in the world. With always the same common points which are insecurity, unsanitary conditions and the precariousness of the people surviving there.
