Last year, there was a lot of talk about the players’ busy schedules. Thibaut Courtois once again addressed the subject.
Many players and coaches have complained about overwork caused by the international calendar. Thibaut Courtois is one of them, he provided some details about his point of view in an interview with CNN.
“It’s not that there are too many games…the problem is that we have too little rest,” he said. The Real Madrid goalkeeper also deplores the overly recurring use of an argument which is not one according to him.
“We have to put an end to excuses like ‘you’re making a lot of money’. We can also make money by playing ten games less,” he added.
You have to experience it to understand it
“If you explain this to NBA or NFL players, they won’t understand. If you’re on a team that plays once a week, you don’t understand this scheduling problem, because you have a game every Saturday and that’s how it happens… but for us, the best players, it’s different” continues Courtois.
For him, there is a real gap between the decision-makers of world football and the feelings of those who suffer the consequences of their decisions: “The professional football players’ union (FIFPRO) tries to protect us, but the other bodies do not think not ours.”
