The main suspect in the alleged assassination of Orlan Mélon sentenced to prison in a related case: what is he accused of?

The main suspect in the alleged assassination of Orlan Mélon was sentenced Thursday by the Liège criminal court to a partially suspended 5-year prison sentence in an additional case of cannabis cultivation and drug trafficking. In all, fifteen defendants were convicted in this case initiated during the investigation into the death of Orlan Mélon.

Fifteen defendants were responsible for drug trafficking in this case which concerns cannabis plantations located in Braives and Houffalize. The case is linked to the death of Orlan Mélon, a 25-year-old from Liége who disappeared in January 2024. His body was found in July 2024 in Yernée-Fraineux.

The investigation revealed that the alleged assassination of Orlan Mélon was committed in the context of drug cultivation and trafficking. This additional file was judged by the Liège criminal court, which rendered a judgment of conviction this Thursday.

Brandon Mathy, main suspect in the alleged assassination of Orlan Mélon, had been involved in cultivation and trafficking events which took place between 2021 and 2024. He was Orlan Mélon’s right-hand man. The court handed down a 5-year prison sentence against him, suspended for a fifth.

Most of the defendants were prosecuted for production, possession and sale of narcotics in association. The owner of the house in Houffalize, where a plantation of 632 plants was installed, was sentenced to 36 months in prison. The mother of Orlan Mélon, who had allowed the planting of a crop of 500 plants in her home in Braives and had shared the profits with her son, was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The other defendants were sentenced, depending on the degree of involvement and their criminal records, to prison or labor sentences.
